Nutrition Notes-Gerson and the Whole 9

The following rules are based on a blend of the Whole30 program (http://whole9life.com), Gerson Therapy (www.gerson.org) and alkaline foods. These guidelines will promote an anti-cancer lifestyle, improve energy levels, weight loss, reduce or negate digestive issues, skin troubles, headaches and seasonal allergies.

“The Gerson diet is entirely organic and vegetarian. The diet is naturally high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, micro-nutrients, and extremely low in sodium, fats, and proteins.” www.gerson.org . Gerson does not allow berries, pineapples, avocadoes or nuts. He believes the fruit are full of aromatic acids and nuts and avocadoes are too high in fats or proteins. He is extra strict with people with serious diseases. Celery can be eaten, but not in juices.

“In Dr. Gerson’s day, he assumed a general time for healing and rebuilding the body, including restoring the liver and essential organs to full function to be about 18 months to 2 years. We now find that it takes much longer due to the body being more toxic and depleted.” http://gerson.org/gerpress/faqs-diet/.  Dr. Gerson only temporarily bans some animal protein like eggs, chicken and fish for serious cases. The rules below are not strictly Gerson. We incorporate organic, lean animal protein and more healthy fats.

  • – “Eat real food – meat, seafood, eggs, tons of vegetables, some fruit, and plenty of good fats from fruits, oils, nuts and seeds. Eat foods with very few ingredients, all pronounceable ingredients, or better yet, no ingredients listed at all because they’re totally natural and unprocessed.” http://whole9life.com
  • – No red meat.
  • – No sprouts. Dr Max Gerson banned sprouts for his patients after seeing symptoms come back.
  • – Do not consume added sugar of any kind, real or artificial. No maple syrup, honey, agave nectar, coconut sugar, Splenda, Equal, Nutrasweet, xylitol, stevia, truvia etc.
  • – No alcohol.
  • – “Do not eat grains. This includes (but is not limited to) wheat, rye, barley, oats, corn, rice, millet, bulgur, sorghum, amaranth, buckwheat, sprouted grains and all of those gluten-free pseudo-grains like quinoa..” http://whole9life.com
  • – “Do not eat legumes. This includes beans of all kinds (black, red, pinto, navy, white, kidney, lima, fava, etc.), peas, chickpeas, lentils, and peanuts. No peanut butter, either. This also includes all forms of soy – soy sauce, miso, tofu, tempeh, edamame, and all the ways we sneak soy into foods (like lecithin).” http://whole9life.com Also in line with Gerson.
  • – “Do not eat dairy. This includes cow, goat or sheep’s milk products such as cream, cheese (hard or soft), kefir, yogurt (even Greek), and sour cream.” http://whole9life.com
  • – No carrageenan, MSG, sulfites, pickles, orange and lemon rind, cocoa, white potatoes, fried foods, nitrites, nitrates, added salt.
